BallBusiness Launches CSR Initiative to Advance Player Education in Grassroots Football

The BallBusiness has unveiled a grassroots football development initiative, the Pitch Project, aimed at equipping young African footballers with the knowledge and support needed to navigate the professional game.

The five-day Corporate Social Responsibility-driven programme is designed to address challenges confronting grassroots football, including lack of player education, poor understanding of contracts, weak safeguarding structures, limited opportunities for female players and exposure to fraudulent football opportunities.

The inaugural edition of the initiative is scheduled to hold from July 27 to 31, 2026, at the Ilaji Sports Resort, Ibadan, Oyo State, with over 200 male and female athletes expected to participate.

According to the organisers, the project was created to bridge the gap between grassroots football and the professional game by providing young players with education on player rights, contracts, agent relationships, personal branding, mental wellbeing and career development.

The organisers said many talented footballers across Africa often have the ability and ambition to succeed but lack access to critical information that can help them make informed decisions and protect themselves from exploitation.

“Talent may open the door, but knowledge helps players walk through it safely,” the organisers said, stressing the importance of preparing young athletes beyond their abilities on the pitch.

The programme will combine educational sessions with structured football competitions, allowing players to learn from industry professionals while showcasing their talents before football stakeholders, including scouts, agents and academy directors.

The Pitch Project will feature five male teams and five female teams, with equal opportunities for participants regardless of gender.

The male teams include Mallam Football Academy, Snow Lions Football Club, Seamoriow Football Club, Ilaji Football Club and Osun United Football Club, while the female teams are Obosa Football Club, Osun Babes FC, FC Robo, Imo Striker Queens FC and Asisat Oshoala Academy.

The opening day of the programme, July 27, will focus on safeguarding and human trafficking in football, while July 28 will centre on player branding and identity.

Participants will receive training on mental health and wellbeing on July 29, followed by sessions on contracts, agents and scouting on July 30.

The event will conclude on July 31 with the last round of matches, graduation ceremony, and closing keynote session.

The organisers noted that the initiative was aimed at creating a safer and more informed pathway for young footballers, particularly those from grassroots communities.

The BallBusiness said future editions of the Pitch Project would expand across Africa, focusing on football education, safeguarding, female football development, mental wellbeing, legal awareness and increased visibility for emerging players.

The organisation also called on corporate organisations, brands and football stakeholders to support the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to use football as a tool for youth empowerment and social development.
