The University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as the fourth most preferred institution among candidates who applied for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, according to new statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The figures, presented on Monday during JAMB’s ongoing policy meeting in Abuja, showed that Lagos State University topped the list with 84,426 first-choice applications from candidates across the country.
University of Lagos followed with 78,240 applications, while Obafemi Awolowo University ranked third after attracting 60,370 applications.
UI secured the fourth position with 58,895 applications, ahead of University of Benin, which recorded 55,425 applications.
Other institutions listed among the top 10 most preferred universities include Nnamdi Azikiwe University with 54,085 applications, University of Ilorin with 52,514 applications, and University of Nigeria with 51,660 applications.
The list also featured Federal University Oye-Ekiti and University of Port Harcourt, which recorded 48,272 and 48,199 applications respectively.
The statistics reflected shifting admission trends among candidates, with LASU emerging as the most sought-after institution despite not appearing among the top 10 in some previous admission cycles.
However, universities such as UNILAG, UI, OAU and UNILORIN maintained strong positions over the years, reflecting sustained confidence from admission seekers nationwide.
The policy meeting also featured discussions on admission benchmarks and other guidelines expected to shape the 2026 admission process into tertiary institutions across the country.
