The Oyo State Police Command has continued its crackdown on crime with two major operational successes, including the arrest of an 18-year-old for defiling a minor and the dismantling of a transnational ammunition trafficking syndicate.
In a statement released on Friday by Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlande Olayinka, the Command said operatives of the Ilero Divisional Police Headquarters arrested Basit Tijani, 18, following allegations that he lured a 17-year-old girl into his room and unlawfully had carnal knowledge of her without consent. The incident was promptly reported, enabling swift police intervention.
Alayande said the victim was rescued and immediately taken to a medical facility where she received a full medical examination and socio-psychological support. Tijani reportedly confessed to the crime and is cooperating with ongoing investigations.
He also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Gender Desk for thorough investigation, after which the suspect will be charged to court.
CP Haruna reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence, urging parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant.
In a separate operation, operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit at Saki arrested two suspected international gun runners, Isiaka Dare, 35, and Taiwo Ayodabo, 33, at Budo Mosalasi, Saki. The suspects allegedly trafficked ammunition illegally from the Republic of Benin into Nigeria through unauthorized routes.
Police recovered a total of 2,625 cartridges concealed in 105 packets within four jerry cans, along with two unregistered motorcycles used for transport. Both suspects have confessed and are assisting investigators in identifying other accomplices in the illicit trade.
CP Haruna commended the professionalism of the intelligence-led operation, emphasizing that actionable intelligence and community partnership remain critical in tackling violent crime. He assured residents that the Command would leave no stone unturned in ensuring Oyo State does not serve as a safe haven for crime.
