No Religious Conflict Will Erupt In Southwest – Aso Villa Chaplain

The Chaplain of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has declared that Nigeria’s South West region will not descend into religious conflict, citing strong family bonds, cultural values, and a long history of religious tolerance among the people.

Bishop Adegbite made the assertion while hosting the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, led by its Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, at his residence in Fiditi, Oyo State.

According to the cleric, who also serves as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), the South West remains closely knit through extended family structures and shared cultural heritage that transcend religious differences.

He explained that religious tolerance has always been a defining characteristic of the region, noting that faith diversity has never been a source of hostility within Yoruba families and communities.

Bishop Adegbite disclosed that he was raised in a mixed religious background, revealing that his grandmother was a Muslim who introduced him to Islamic teachings, gave him a Muslim name, and encouraged him to observe fasting during Ramadan before he later became a Christian cleric.

He said the experience shaped his lifelong belief that religious differences should never be grounds for conflict, stressing that respect for family, community, and humanity remains central to Yoruba tradition.

The Aso Villa Chaplain added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shares similar values, describing the President as a leader who embraces Nigerians of all faiths in the interest of peace, unity, and national development.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, Mr Akeem Abas, commended President Tinubu for appointing Bishop Adegbite, an indigene of Oyo State, as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission.

Abas described the appointment as well deserved, saying Bishop Adegbite possesses the experience, character, and competence required for the national assignment.

He also sought the support of the NCPC leadership for journalists in the state and expressed confidence that Nigeria’s image would enjoy improved global recognition in pilgrimage activities under Bishop Adegbite’s stewardship.
