“Gbenu Si Mike” Anchor Oriyomi Hamzat Declares Intention to Run for Oyo Governorship in 2027

Popular broadcaster and media entrepreneur, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.

Hamzat, the founder of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, and anchor of the widely followed radio programme “Gbenu Si Mike”, made the declaration at a public event on Friday, announcing that he will be running on the platform of the Accord Party.

Speaking during the event, the broadcaster stated that he would no longer mobilise support or campaign for any political aspirant, stressing that his full focus ahead of 2027 would be on his own political ambition.

“I am publicly declaring today that in 2027, I will not campaign for anyone or mobilise crowds for anyone,” Hamzat said.

Ahead of the declaration, Hamzat had appealed to his supporters to remain calm amid reports that authorities allegedly issued directives preventing buses and other means of transportation from conveying people to the venue of the event.

He assured his followers that the programme would still hold as scheduled, expressing confidence that it would be successful despite the reported restrictions.

“I want everyone to calm down. By God’s grace, the event on Saturday will surely hold and it will be a success. I am not angry at anyone,” he said.

Reacting to claims that vehicles were barred from transporting supporters, Hamzat remarked that while authorities could restrict buses, they could not prevent citizens from trekking to the venue.

“Thank God you can’t tell them not to walk since you refused to let buses carry them,” he added.

However, the media personality emphasised that the safety of his supporters remained a top priority, particularly those who might have to trek long distances. He therefore called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure adequate protection.

“Nothing must happen to my supporters that will be trekking to the venue. I am specially calling on the police and the DSS to ensure their safety,” Hamzat said.

He also clarified that the gathering was strictly a declaration of intention and not a campaign rally, urging authorities and the public not to misinterpret the event.

“I am not having a campaign; this is just a declaration of intention,” he stated.
