Kano Govt Suspends Doctors Who Forgot Scissors In Patient’s Stomach

The Kano State Government has suspended three medical personnel following the death of a patient, Aishatu Umar, at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, Kano, over what authorities described as medical negligence.

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board confirmed that a preliminary investigation revealed that surgical scissors were mistakenly left inside the patient’s stomach after a surgical procedure, leading to fatal complications.

The Board disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, following an investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda.

According to the statement, the three medical workers directly involved in the surgery have been suspended from clinical duties with immediate effect, pending the conclusion of a full investigation.

“The preliminary findings revealed that a surgical instrument was inadvertently left inside the patient’s body after the procedure,” the statement said.

The Board added that the matter had been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive probe and appropriate disciplinary measures in line with professional standards and existing laws.

“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathises with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.

The incident had earlier sparked public concern after reports emerged that Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, died following complications from surgery at the government-owned health facility.

Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, alleged that his wife complained repeatedly of severe pain and health complications after the operation, but her condition worsened before she eventually passed away.
