Funke Akindele Becomes Africa’s Highest-Grossing Filmmaker as Behind The Scenes Crosses ₦2.1bn

Renowned Nollywood actress, producer and director, Funke Akindele, has officially become Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker of all time following the box office success of her latest movie, Behind The Scenes, which has surpassed the ₦2.1 billion mark in cinema earnings.

According to data released by FilmOne Entertainment, Behind The Scenes is now the first Nollywood film in Africa to cross ₦2 billion at the box office, setting a historic record for the Nigerian film industry.

Akindele confirmed the milestone on Sunday, January 12, via her official Instagram page, where she shared a celebratory video and expressed heartfelt gratitude to God and her fans across the world for their overwhelming support.

The filmmaker described the achievement as a moment of immense joy, noting that the journey would not have been possible without the unwavering loyalty of her audience. She thanked her supporters for consistently showing up and believing in the vision of the Funke Akindele Network.

Just a week earlier, Entertainment Region had reported that the film crossed ₦1.7 billion, making its rapid rise to ₦2.1 billion a remarkable feat within a short period.

Beyond the financial milestone, Behind The Scenes has also emerged as the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all timeacross Africa, the United Kingdom and Ireland, further cementing Akindele’s dominance at the box office. The achievement also makes her the first African filmmaker to rank number one at the box office for three consecutive years.

The movie is currently showing in cinemas nationwide in Nigeria, as well as in select Odeon cinemas in the UK and Ireland. It is also screening at Regal Cinemas in the United States, with Canadian cinema runs scheduled to commence from January 16 at Landmark Cinemas.
