Police Arrest Driver in Anthony Joshua Accident Case

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, noting that the driver is currently in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.

The accident occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team reportedly rammed into a stationary truck along the busy expressway. Two of Joshua’s close associates — his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami — lost their lives in the crash.

The Federal Road Safety Corps had earlier disclosed that five adult males were involved in the accident, with two fatalities recorded, one person sustaining injuries and two others escaping unhurt. The FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, describing them as common causes of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.

Meanwhile, Joshua, who sustained injuries in the incident, has been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos. He was released late on Wednesday night after medical personnel confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.

Confirming the development in a brief post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Babaseyi stated, “The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing.”
