The African Development Bank Group (AfDB), in partnership with Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), has officially opened applications for the 2026 SHOU Scholarship Programmes, offering fully funded opportunities for African nationals interested in fisheries, aquaculture, marine science, and related fields.
The programme, aligned with the AfDB’s Ten-Year Strategy (2024–2033) is designed to build a new generation of skilled African professionals capable of driving sustainable aquatic development and strengthening the continent’s blue economy. SHOU, a globally respected institution in marine science and ocean governance, brings decades of research excellence and partnerships with more than 40 institutions worldwide to the initiative.
Under the scheme, successful applicants will study at Shanghai Ocean University in China, with opportunities available at both the Summer School level and in Master’s and PhD programmes.
The scholarship covers full tuition, accommodation, meals, and a monthly stipend, providing students access to top-tier academic staff, research laboratories, and specialised training facilities. However, candidates are required to fund their own flight tickets and visa fees.
Eligibility criteria include:
-
Being a national of any African country
-
Meeting SHOU’s academic requirements for the chosen programme
-
Demonstrating strong interest in marine-related fields
-
Showing academic excellence and commitment to advancing Africa’s blue economy
-
English proficiency (minimum IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80)
-
Ability to comply with SHOU’s rules and conduct guidelines
-

Applications close on 10 December 2025. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and the scholarship does not guarantee employment with AfDB.
The AfDB emphasised that the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to strengthening technical capacity across Africa’s food systems and marine sectors, while SHOU reiterated its dedication to supporting African scholars through world-class training and global exposure.
