Kwara Government Orders Immediate Closure of Schools in Four LGAs

The Kwara State government has ordered the immediate shutdown of all schools in four local government areas as authorities respond to rising security threats in the region.

The directive, disclosed on Wednesday by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Kwara State chapter, affects schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas.

According to the circular issued by NUT Chairman Yusuf Agboola, the decision was made following instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.

Agboola stated, “Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice.

This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation.”

The closure comes just days after armed bandits attacked a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, killing three worshippers and abducting several others. The series of attacks in the region has raised concerns about the safety of students, prompting the government to take immediate preventive measures.

School administrators and teachers have been advised to await further directives from the state government as security agencies continue to assess and stabilize the affected areas.

Residents and parents have expressed worry over the escalating insecurity, particularly as many communities rely on farming and other local activities that are being disrupted by recurring attacks. The government has promised to provide updates as the situation evolves.
