The 27th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has officially drawn to a vibrant close at the University of Jos, with Benson Idahosa University (BIU) emerging as overall champions in a competition marked by unity, resilience, and outstanding athletic excellence.
The colourful closing ceremony, held at the UNIJOS Sports Arena on Saturday, brought together government officials, traditional rulers, academic leaders, and sports enthusiasts from across the country. The atmosphere was electrifying as delegations celebrated the achievements of their athletes and reflected on the spirit of sportsmanship that defined the 2025 games.
According to the final medal table released at the event, Benson Idahosa University clinched first position, topping the championship with an impressive 31 medals. The host institution, University of Jos, followed closely with 49 medals, securing second place after a strong showing across multiple sporting categories. The University of Benin finished third with 34 medals, rounding off the top three in a highly competitive field.
The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries including the Governor of Plateau State, represented by Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo; the Emir of Zuru; the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS); and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan. Their presence underscored the significance of the NUGA Games as a platform for national bonding, youth development, and institutional collaboration.
Addressing participants, representatives of the organising committee praised the resilience and discipline displayed by athletes throughout the competition. They also commended UNIJOS for its hospitality and logistical excellence, which contributed to what many described as one of the most successful editions of NUGA in recent years.
