The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has issued a stern warning that it will withdraw the certificates of any graduate found guilty of misconduct or actions capable of bringing the institution into disrepute.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, delivered the warning on Friday during the 36th Convocation Ceremonyand the award of First Degrees for the 2024/2025 academic session, where 2,747 students formally graduated.
Prof. Oladiji urged the fresh graduates to uphold strong moral values and make integrity their guiding principle, noting that character remains a fundamental benchmark for success.
“As it is often said, no man can climb beyond the limits of his character. Your character would determine how far you go in life,” she said.
“Bear in mind also that the university reserves the right to withdraw your certificate if you misrepresent her anywhere. Our expectation is that you will become alumni we can be proud of.”
The vice-chancellor encouraged the graduates to respond to Nigeria’s economic challenges with creativity, innovation, and resilience. She emphasized that while skills may open doors, it is character that sustains long-term progress and leadership.
Providing a breakdown of the convocation statistics, Oladiji noted that 240 students graduated with First Class, 1,479 with Second Class Upper, 912 with Second Class Lower, and 116 with Third Class.
She also announced Aduragbemi Akindunbi of Civil Engineering as the overall best graduating student, with an outstanding 4.98 CGPA.
Speaking at the event, FUTA Pro-Chancellor Prof. Nora Daduut praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, describing it as a transformative plan aimed at elevating Nigeria’s global standing. She highlighted the governing council’s commitment to staff welfare, training, and capacity building.
Prof. Daduut further disclosed that over 3,000 FUTA students have benefitted from the student loan scheme introduced under the current administration, easing access to higher education despite funding constraints affecting many institutions. She urged the graduating students to become responsible citizens and agents of positive change.
Despite the financial hurdles facing tertiary institutions nationwide, the pro-chancellor noted that FUTA recorded significant achievements during the 2024/2025 academic year and reaffirmed the university’s resolve to continue building a reputable academic environment.
