After Months of Speculation, UI Students’ Union AGS Cleared of Financial Misappropriation

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ibadan has cleared the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) of the Students’ Union, Emmanuel Olawoye, of allegations of financial misappropriation and falsification of records. However, the Council found him guilty of procedural negligence and imposed a fine of ₦5,000.

The decision followed the presentation of a disciplinary report during the 8th Emergency Plenary Meeting of the UISU SRC, held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Kunle Adepeju Building, Students’ Union Building (SUB).

The matter originated from an audit report submitted by the SRC Audit Committee, which raised concerns about discrepancies in the financial records of the 2025 Students’ Union Freshers’ Week held between May 11 and 17. The Audit Committee and the Events & Projects Monitoring Committee had accused the AGS of financial irregularities in his expenditure reports.

According to the Disciplinary Committee’s report dated October 9, 2025, Olawoye faced allegations of financial misappropriation, falsification of records, wilful neglect of duty, and breach of financial regulations.

However, after a detailed investigation, the Committee found that most discrepancies highlighted in the audit report were due to poor communication between the AGS and the Events & Projects Monitoring Committee during the Freshers’ Week.

The verification exercise confirmed that funds were appropriately spent across all seven days of the event, with Olawoye personally adding small amounts on some days to complete payments.

The Committee therefore cleared him of all financial misconduct but found him guilty of two procedural offences — failure to promptly submit financial documents to the Audit Committee and failure to maintain adequate communication with the Events & Projects Monitoring Committee during the event.
As a result, the SRC directed Olawoye to write formal letters of apology to both committees for procedural negligence and to pay a fine of ₦5,000 into the Union’s account within 48 hours.

The resolution was adopted by the Council at the plenary, marking the official closure of the investigation.
