A tragic accident has claimed the lives of three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, while seven others sustained serious injuries in a multiple-vehicle collision at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday through its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the statement, the accident occurred when a tipper truck loaded with sand suffered brake failure and rammed into several vehicles along the busy corridor, resulting in a deadly pile-up.
“In an incident of profound tragedy that cast a pall of grief over Ikorodu, three promising LASUSTECH students — two males and one female — lost their lives on the spot in a fatal multiple-vehicle collision earlier today,” Taofiq said.
He explained that the crash involved an unregistered tipper truck, a Toyota Corolla (SMK 42 AJ), an MPV bus, and four tricycles. Preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was travelling at high speed before its brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and crash into other vehicles.
Emergency responders, including personnel from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Police, swiftly moved to the scene to rescue victims. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment, while the deceased were evacuated to the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary.
Taofiq added that all wrecked vehicles were later cleared from the road to ease traffic congestion and restore order in the area.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims. He described the crash as “avoidable,” attributing it to overspeeding, mechanical failure, and negligence by commercial drivers.
Bakare-Oki also called for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection and maintenance standards to curb recurring fatal accidents on Lagos roads.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of LASUSTECH, Mr. Lanre Kuye, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to him were not responded to as of press time.
The accident comes barely 24 hours after another truck lost control along the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, injuring eight people.
