Opay Becomes Heartbreak Insurance, Refunds Guys Ghosted After Sending Fare

In what many are calling “the best fintech feature of the year,” OPay has reportedly begun refunding users who send transport fare to people—mostly dates—who collect the money and then disappear.

The revelation went viral on social media after several users shared testimonies of being credited back by the company after providing proof of chats and payment receipts.
One user recounted that after sending money to a woman who later blocked him, OPay still refunded his cash once he reported the case.

“She collected the fare and blocked me, but OPay still refunded me,” he wrote, sparking laughter and debate across X (formerly Twitter).

The fintech platform, known for its quick transfers and ride services, has not released an official statement confirming a policy on “ghost-date refunds,” but user reports suggest that cases backed with sufficient proof are being considered under fraud and unauthorized transactions.

The news has since divided opinions online. While many applauded OPay for protecting users from “emotional and financial heartbreak,” others joked that the feature might finally bring an end to Nigeria’s long-running “send me transport” culture.

Some users even suggested that OPay had now become a form of “heartbreak insurance”, offering comfort to men who fall victim to online dating tricks.

As dating and digital payments continue to blend in Nigeria’s social space, OPay’s move—whether official or circumstantial—has positioned the company at the center of an amusing yet telling cultural moment: where technology meets heartbreak, and love now comes with a refund policy.
