Tragedy struck in Jos, Plateau State, as a 23-year-old student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), identified as David Nanpon Timmap, allegedly killed his colleague and buried him in a shallow grave inside his room at Rusau village, Jos North Local Government Area.

According to reports, the deceased, Peter Mafuyai, a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance, was murdered by Timmap, a 200-level Agriculture student, following what sources described as a shocking and unprovoked attack.
Daily Trust reports that both students had earlier gone out to play football before heading to a music studio for a recording session. Upon returning home, Timmap reportedly fetched a machete under the guise of needing it for “something” and suddenly struck Mafuyai with it.

Eyewitnesses said other occupants of the compound raised the alarm, demanding to know why he attacked his friend. However, Timmap allegedly ignored them and, before help could arrive, buried Mafuyai’s body behind the house in a shallow grave.
“The police have since invited all their friends for questioning and are currently investigating the matter,” a source told journalists.
While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, sources hinted it might be linked to the music project both students were working on before the tragedy.

When contacted, the Acting Head of Information at UNIJOS, Tongdyen Dachung, declined to comment, stating that she needed to confirm details before issuing an official statement. The Plateau State Police Command is yet to release an official statement as of press time.
This shocking incident adds to the growing list of student-related violence across Nigerian campuses. In January, a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University was arrested for stabbing a colleague during an argument, while in 2023, a student of the Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State, was killed by peers over a romantic dispute.
