Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), has once again brought pride to Nigeria after clinching second position at the 2025 Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Global Challenge Bowl, an international competition that brings together the brightest young geoscientists from universities around the world.
The grand finale of the prestigious event, held on October 15, 2025, featured 19 top-performing universitiesrepresenting different continents. EKSU earned its place at the global contest after finishing as first runner-up in the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Qualifier earlier in June.

At the world stage, Team EKSU—made up of Boluwatife Osasona, Lawrence Blessing, Olajioye Idowu, and Adeniyi Favour—distinguished itself with remarkable intellect and teamwork, surpassing institutions such as the University of Colorado, USA, which placed third. The University of Lagos eventually clinched the top spot.
Speaking on the remarkable feat, Professor Adeyinka Aturamu, Head of the Department of Geology, commended the students for their brilliance and dedication, while appreciating their coordinator, Mr. Matthew Adeniran, and other departmental staff for their guidance and mentorship.
Similarly, Professor Lawrence Ademilua, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, described the achievement as evidence of EKSU’s growing global competitiveness and academic excellence. He acknowledged the support of the University’s Management and the Vice-Chancellor, noting that institutional backing has been vital in grooming world-class students.

While hosting the victorious team, Vice-Chancellor Professor Babatola Ayodele congratulated the students for bringing honour to the university and Nigeria. He announced that the institution would present each team member with letters of commendation and valuable gifts as motivation for continued excellence.

Professor Ayodele lauded the team’s performance as a reflection of EKSU’s academic strength, innovation, and rising global reputation. He also expressed gratitude to the Chancellor, Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, for his ongoing contributions to infrastructural and capacity development, particularly within the Department of Geology.
