As the world marks the 2025 edition of World Food Day, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and renowned philanthropist, Prince Kola Asanike, has called on Nigerians, particularly Oyo State residents to prioritise agriculture over the unrestrained conversion of arable lands into housing estates and commercial properties.

Prince Asanike, who has been a consistent advocate for sustainable agricultural development, said the theme of this year’s commemoration “Hand in hand for better food and a better future!’, reinforces the urgent need for nations like Nigeria to revisit their agricultural policies and land-use priorities.
According to him, “We cannot continue to sacrifice fertile farmlands for buildings while lamenting food scarcity and rising costs. Agriculture is not just an occupation; it is the lifeline of every economy. The land should serve humanity through food production first before luxury.”

The APC stalwart stressed that Nigeria’s overdependence on food imports is a direct consequence of neglecting agriculture, poor rural investment, and the growing trend of real estate development on lands previously used for farming. He appealed to governments at all levels to make deliberate policies that protect agricultural lands, provide incentives for farmers, and attract young people to agribusiness.
Prince Asanike, who has over the years supported rural farmers through empowerment programmes and agricultural cooperatives, noted that food security is the foundation of national security.

He emphasised that “no nation can be politically stable or economically independent if it cannot feed its people.”
While commending President Bola Tinubu’s renewed focus on food security, the APC chieftain urged the federal and state governments to collaborate in ensuring that agricultural policies are implemented beyond political promises.
He concluded by reaffirming his personal commitment to agricultural advocacy and community development, pledging to continue supporting initiatives that empower local farmers, promote food sustainability, and preserve Nigeria’s agricultural heritage.
