The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Juwon Arotiba, has reaffirmed the institution’s enduring reputation as Nigeria’s “First and Best” university, emphasizing that the motto represents a living standard of excellence that must be reflected in every public engagement of the institution.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, at a sensitization workshop organized by the University’s Ceremonial Committee, Professor Arotiba urged members of staff to embody the University’s legacy of discipline, orderliness, and professionalism, particularly as the institution prepares for its 77th Convocation Ceremonies and Foundation Day Anniversary.
According to him, the convocation ceremony is not just another university event but a defining moment that showcases the strength of the University’s systems, values, and people. He noted that it is the most public-facing and symbolic occasion where the University presents its greatest product — its graduates — to the world.

“The 77th Convocation Ceremonies present a prime opportunity to show that our claim of being ‘First and Best’ is not merely historical but actively demonstrated,” Arotiba said.
“The world’s perception of the University’s excellence and order is formed by what it sees at our ceremonies. This means every staff member plays a vital role in sustaining that image.”

In his welcome address, the Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, fspsp, reminded participants that as public servants, they are constantly engaging with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. He described guests as the University’s clients and urged staff to treat every interaction with respect, empathy, and professionalism befitting the nation’s premier university.
The Chairman of the Ceremonial Committee, Professor Adenike Akinjobi, said the workshop was themed “Communication Appropriateness, Social Etiquette, and Orderliness”, explaining that the training aimed to prepare staff who serve as the University’s first point of contact with visitors.
She disclosed that participants were drawn from various strategic units — including the Safety Unit, Student Affairs Division, Bursary, Protocols and Passages Unit, Internally Generated Revenue Unit, University Health Service, Directorate of Public Communication, and Faculty Offices — to ensure a coordinated and excellent representation of the University during the convocation ceremonies.
Professor Akinjobi stressed that the University of Ibadan must continue to project excellence not just in academics and research, but also in the way it organizes, communicates, and interacts with the public.
Specialized sessions were facilitated by Professor Adebimpe Adenugba of the Department of Sociology and Dr. A. Osisanwo of the Department of English, who both delivered insightful lectures on professional conduct and institutional representation
