WhatsApp to Replace Phone Numbers with Usernames

WhatsApp is testing a feature that could allow users to connect without revealing their phone numbers, marking one of the biggest privacy changes in the app’s history.

According to reports from WhatsApp’s beta testing programme, the messaging platform — owned by Meta — is experimenting with a new system that lets users create unique usernames, similar to how handles work on Instagram, Telegram, or X (formerly Twitter).

The update would enable users to chat or join groups using usernames instead of phone numbers, offering more privacy and control, particularly in large communities or business interactions where sharing personal numbers may feel intrusive.

Leaked screenshots from the beta version show a new “Username” field in profile settings, giving users the option to set distinctive handles and hide their phone numbers if they wish.

While the move could make WhatsApp function more like a social media platform, experts warn it might also open the door to challenges such as username squatting and impersonation. To address these concerns, WhatsApp is reportedly developing verification tools to ensure authenticity and prevent misuse.

The feature is still under testing, but if officially rolled out, it could revolutionize how over two billion users communicate on the app — shifting the focus from numbers to names, and potentially redefining online identity and privacy across the Meta ecosystem.
