The University of Ibadan (UI) has reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s best university in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2026, toppling Covenant University from the number one spot it held for two consecutive years.
According to the global ranking published on Thursday, UI is now placed within the 801–1000 band worldwide — the highest among Nigerian universities — marking its return to the top after slipping to fourth position in 2025.

The ranking assessed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries using 18 performance indicators grouped under five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.
Covenant University, which led the Nigerian list in 2024 and 2025, dropped to fourth place nationally, behind the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Bayero University, Kano (BUK), ranked second and third respectively.

The 2026 edition also highlighted shifts in global higher education dynamics, drawing on 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications and survey responses from over 108,000 scholars worldwide.
Among Nigerian universities, UNILAG recorded the highest score in research quality (66.7), while BUK topped in international outlook and Covenant maintained the highest industry score, underscoring its strong corporate partnerships.
Out of 51 Nigerian institutions listed, only UI and UNILAG were ranked within the 801–1000 band globally. BUK, Covenant University, and Landmark University followed within the 1001–1200 range.

Other Nigerian universities that appeared in the ranking include Ahmadu Bello University, Federal University of Technology Minna, University of Ilorin, University of Jos, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka — all within 1201–1500 globally.
The Times Higher Education ranking remains one of the most respected global benchmarks for academic excellence. To qualify, universities must teach undergraduates, produce research across multiple disciplines, and publish at least 1,000 research papers between 2020 and 2024, averaging no fewer than 100 annually.
