AAUA Lecturers Threaten to Halt Resumption, Convocation Over Unpaid Salaries

Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have threatened to paralyse academic activities and disrupt the institution’s forthcoming convocation ceremony over unresolved salary arrears and welfare issues.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA chapter, led by its chairman, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, expressed deep frustration at the Ondo State Government’s handling of their grievances. Oshodi said members of the union have endured months of unpaid salaries, withheld entitlements, and worsening living conditions.

“Our members are facing untold hardship. Families are struggling to survive because the government has refused to act despite our repeated appeals,” Oshodi stated.

The union warned that if the matter remains unresolved, the planned resumption of students for the new session would be put on hold. It also hinted at disrupting the much-anticipated convocation ceremony, which is expected to celebrate graduating students.

In response, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, defended the government’s efforts, stressing that the state has consistently supported AAUA despite prevailing economic challenges. He acknowledged the lecturers’ grievances but maintained that dialogue was ongoing to resolve the crisis.

“The government is committed to finding a peaceful resolution. Talks are in progress, and we remain dedicated to sustaining AAUA’s growth,” Ajibefun assured.

The standoff has, however, heightened tension within the Akungba-Akoko campus community, leaving students, parents, and staff uncertain about the fate of academic resumption and convocation plans.
