Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been handed a lifeline after FIFA sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player in a qualifying match against Lesotho.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Monday that South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena was not eligible to feature in the March 21, 2025 fixture, a violation of Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.
As punishment, the match has been declared forfeited, with Lesotho awarded a 3-0 victory. SAFA was also fined CHF 10,000 (approximately USD 11,000), while Mokoena received an official warning.

The development reshapes Group standings. South Africa, who had 17 points, now drop to 14—level with Benin Republic. Nigeria and Rwanda remain just behind with 11 points each.
With two decisive matches coming up in October, the race for the sole ticket is now wide open. For the Super Eagles, who have endured a shaky qualifying campaign, the ruling provides a fresh chance to climb back into contention.
