No School Fees Increase at OAU, Union Tells Students Amid Rumours

The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, popularly known as Great Ife, has assured students that there will be no increase in tuition fees as the new academic session begins on October 11, 2025.

The Union’s leadership moved to dispel rumours of a possible hike in school fees, which had caused widespread anxiety among students and parents across campus and social media platforms.

In a joint statement signed by Union President, Adelani David, and Secretary General, Habeeb Oke Isa, the body confirmed that after formal consultations with the university management, tuition rates remain unchanged from the previous session.

“No faculty has been authorised to introduce hidden or additional charges for the new session,” the statement read. The Union urged students to ignore unverified reports and rely only on official updates from the university and Students’ Union channels.

The Union further reminded students that any decision regarding tuition fees must be publicly communicated by management before implementation.

To support students facing financial difficulty, the leadership encouraged eligible undergraduates to apply for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a government-backed interest-free loan designed to cover tuition and living expenses. According to the Union, orientation sessions will be held on campus to guide students through the loan application process.

Reaffirming its commitment to student welfare, transparency, and accountability, the Union promised to continue constructive dialogue with management while safeguarding against arbitrary policies.

“This assurance should calm fears about rising education costs within OAU,” the leadership said, noting that proactive engagement has historically helped prevent sudden fee hikes.
