FUOYE Students Union Rejects 120% Fee Hike, Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Management

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has strongly condemned the recent decision of the university management to increase tuition fees by a minimum of 100 percent, reaching as high as 120 percent in some departments for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, and signed by the SUG President, Comrade Adio James, General Secretary, Comrade Alao Ayorinde, and Public Relations Officer, Comrade Abiola David, the union described the increment as “outrageous, heartless, and unacceptable,” declaring it a direct attack on the dreams and rights of Nigerian students to affordable education.

The statement, released under the banner of the “Better Days Cabinet,” accused the university management of imposing the fee hike without consultation or transparency, despite the harsh economic conditions facing students and their families.

“This is not just an increment; it is a brutal, calculated attack on our dreams, our future, and our fundamental right to education. We declare this unacceptable, and we will not bow!” the SUG declared.

The union lamented that students already grapple with poor hostels, erratic electricity, bad roads, and dilapidated learning facilities, and yet the management has chosen to worsen their plight instead of addressing these pressing challenges.

According to the SUG, the increment is “a death sentence to the aspirations of countless students, especially those from struggling families who scrape by to afford education.”

Meanwhile, the students issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the FUOYE management to reverse the decision and immediately convene an emergency meeting with student leaders.

The union warned that failure to do so would provoke “the full force of our collective resistance,” urging students to reject the new fee structure.

“We call on every FUOYE student to refuse to pay a single kobo of this preposterous amount. Let the management feel the weight of our defiance,” the statement read.

While the SUG said it is open to dialogue, it warned that management should not mistake this for weakness.

“We extend a hand of partnership, but know this: if you choose to remain adversaries, we are ready to fight with every lawful weapon in our arsenal. Reverse this fee hike, or face the consequences of a united student body that will not be silenced or subdued,” the union leaders wrote.

The statement concluded with the union’s resolve to protect the interests of students, declaring that the fee hike “will not stand.”

“The Better Days Cabinet stands resolute. We will protect the future of every FUOYE student with the fire of our conviction. Aluta continua, victoria ascerta!” the SUG concluded.
