JAMB CAPS Admission Terms Explained: What “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress,” and Others Really Mean

The Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) introduced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was designed to make admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions more transparent and standardised. Yet, year after year, many candidates struggle to understand the different messages they see on their CAPS portal, leading to anxiety and confusion.

From “Not Admitted” to “Transfer Approval,” these terms all carry specific meanings that can determine whether or not a candidate secures a place in their chosen university, polytechnic, or college of education. This report breaks them down for easy understanding.

When a candidate’s status reads Not Admitted, it simply means an admission has not yet been offered. This does not always amount to outright rejection since schools release admission lists in batches. Candidates are advised to keep checking regularly, especially once their institutions start publishing lists.

If you see Admission in Progress, it indicates that your school has already recommended you for admission and JAMB is currently validating the recommendation. At this stage, you are very close to securing admission, and patience is required until the status changes to a confirmed offer.

Once your portal displays Congratulations… Admission Offered, then you have been officially admitted. You must either accept the offer—thus securing the admission—or reject it if you wish to try your chances elsewhere. Failure to act promptly could result in losing the admission altogether.

Sometimes, institutions move candidates to a different course. When this happens, Transfer Approval appears on CAPS. Candidates must decide whether to accept the new course or reject it. Accepting secures the spot, while rejecting could reduce your chances at that particular school.

The Accept Admission and Reject Admission buttons are straightforward actions that confirm your choice. These steps require biometric verification at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre, but can also be done via SMS using the phone number linked to your JAMB profile.

Candidates may also encounter the JAMB Marketplace, a system where schools with vacant slots can offer admission to qualified candidates. Here, you can choose to accept or decline the offer depending on your preference.

In some cases, a candidate’s status may remain blank, meaning the school has yet to upload details or JAMB has not begun processing the admission. Similarly, rare cases show Pending or On Hold, usually due to verification issues or mismatched records. Such problems must be resolved quickly to avoid delays.

Since CAPS is dynamic, statuses can change within days or even hours. Regular checks are crucial to avoid missing deadlines for acceptance or rejection. Importantly, candidates should understand that schools only recommend while JAMB validates. This explains why a delay in confirmation may occur even after a school has released its admission list.

Finally, many candidates lose opportunities because of common mistakes such as ignoring Transfer Approval notices, delaying responses, or using the wrong phone number for SMS confirmation. To avoid such pitfalls, ensure your O’level results are correctly uploaded, monitor your portal frequently, and act swiftly when updates appear.

Admissions can be a long process, but understanding these CAPS terms helps reduce panic and increases your chances of securing a place in your chosen institution.
