What Will Happen in Nigeria by 8PM Today

Nigerians are set to witness a rare celestial spectacle tonight, as a total lunar eclipse will light up the skies across the country beginning at 8:00 PM West Africa Time.

The event, which will last for about 83 minutes, will cause the Moon to take on a reddish glow — popularly known as a “blood moon” — offering a breathtaking view for stargazers across Nigeria and much of Africa.

According to the National Television Authority, the eclipse will be visible in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe. However, experts noted that westernmost regions may miss the early stages due to the Moon rising closer to totality.

Scientists explain that a total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in such a way that Earth’s shadow completely covers the lunar surface. Unlike solar eclipses, it is completely safe to view with the naked eye.

Astronomers say rural areas with less light pollution, including parts of Yobe and Borno, will offer the clearest vantage points for observing the phenomenon.

NASA, which has also confirmed the eclipse, said the Moon’s reddish appearance is the result of sunlight bending through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out blue light and casting a coppery glow on the lunar surface.

The rare display is expected to captivate millions across Nigeria, marking one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year.
