The Federal Government has announced a major increase in the cost of obtaining Nigerian passports, raising the fees significantly across categories.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 28, 2025, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) confirmed that the new charges will take effect from September 1.
Under the revised structure, the 32-page passport booklet with a five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, up from the previous ₦26,000. Similarly, the 64-page passport with a 10-year validity will now be issued at ₦200,000.

This latest adjustment follows a similar upward review in 2024, which sparked widespread public concern.

NIS, however, noted that the new fees apply only within Nigeria, while charges for passport issuance in the diaspora remain unchanged.
The announcement has already triggered strong reactions among Nigerians, many of whom expressed frustration over the sharp increase in a period of economic hardship.
