Final-Year Kogi Polytechnic Student Dies During Attempted Abortion

A 26-year-old final-year student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has died while attempting to terminate a six-month pregnancy at a private clinic in the state capital.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Al-Hassan Clinic and Maternity, Sarkin Noma, Lokoja. The deceased, identified as Omotosho Dorcas, reportedly suffered excessive bleeding during the procedure and eventually died.

Sources told Zagazola that police detectives visited the scene, took photographs, and evacuated the body to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, for preservation.

The owner of the clinic, alleged to have carried out the procedure, has been arrested, and the case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

This tragedy adds to a worrying trend of unsafe abortions among Nigerian students. In 2020, a similar case was recorded at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, where a 300-level Political Science student, Gift Imoluamen, lost her life while undergoing an abortion allegedly linked to a local pastor.
