The Benue State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies in nursery and basic schools, particularly at the kindergarten level, across the state.
In a circular dated August 15, 2025, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management, Mrs. Helen Zeramo, the government also prohibited the use of customised textbooks and exercise books in both public and private schools.
According to the circular, the practice of introducing customised educational materials makes such books non-transferable to other learners, thereby imposing unnecessary financial burdens on parents. The ministry directed schools to revert to the traditional practice where senior students pass down books to their juniors.
The new directive further abolished compulsory after-school lessons, except where parents give explicit consent.
The policies are expected to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session and must be strictly observed by all schools in the state.
To ensure smooth implementation, the ministry has scheduled a meeting with school proprietors, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and other education stakeholders for Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
