Stop Using Tissue Paper After Toilet, UK-Based Nigerian Doctor Warns

A UK-based Nigerian doctor has advised against the common practice of using dry tissue paper after visiting the toilet, warning that it is one of the least effective methods of maintaining proper anal hygiene.

Dr. Olufunmilayo, popularly known on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as OurfavonlineDoc, told his followers that relying solely on tissue paper often fails to clean the anal area properly. According to him, this can leave faecal residue behind, stain underwear and cause itching.

“The healthiest way to clean your anus after doing a poo is not tissue paper,” he wrote. “Tissue paper only removes some of the faeces and smears the rest around your anus. This is one reason why your boxers or underwear is always stained and your anus is sometimes itchy.”

The medical doctor explained that washing with water remains the most effective option for personal hygiene, while wet wipes are a secondary alternative. Dry toilet tissue, however, he ranked as the least effective.

“The ideal and healthiest way to clean your anus is with water. The next best way is with wet wipes. Dry toilet tissue paper is the worst way,” he added.

His comments quickly sparked an online debate. Many users agreed, pointing out that people in parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa already prefer water-based cleaning, which leaves a fresher result. Others, however, defended the use of toilet tissue, describing it as a matter of habit and convenience, particularly in Western countries where bidets or water hoses are uncommon.

Public health experts generally recommend washing with water after toilet use, noting that it reduces skin irritation, prevents infections and promotes better hygiene. Environmental experts, however, warn against excessive use of wet wipes, which can clog sewage systems when not properly disposed of.

Dr. Olufunmilayo concluded his post by urging people to adopt healthier practices wherever possible.

“If you can afford to, or you have access to it, please always use water,” he said.
