The Nigerian movie industry has lost one of its iconic figures as veteran Yoruba actor Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70.

Film producer and industry insider Seun Oloketuyi broke the news in an Instagram post on Friday morning, writing: “Popular actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief Kanran died Friday morning. Details soon.”
Chief Kanran, celebrated for his regal screen presence, sophisticated style, and quick wit, enjoyed a career spanning decades. Starting on stage before making a mark on television and in films, he rose to prominence through Yoruba stage performances and a well-loved NTA drama series.

His filmography boasts classics such as Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala. Often cast as kings, chiefs, or respected elders, his commanding portrayals left an indelible mark on audiences.
As of press time, the cause of death remains undisclosed, and his family has yet to release details of his funeral arrangements.

Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues who remember him not only for his memorable roles but also for his lasting contribution to the Yoruba film industry and Nigerian cinema at large.
