17-Year-Old Nigerian Student Beats 69 Countries to Win Global English Championship

A 17-year-old student from Yobe State, Nigeria, Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, has achieved global recognition after emerging as the overall winner of the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals, an international English language competition held in London.

Representing Nigeria through Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC), Yobe State, Nafisa outperformed over 20,000 students from 69 countries, showcasing exceptional proficiency in English grammar, vocabulary, and communication. Her victory marks a historic achievement for Nigeria on the international academic stage.

In a statement following the announcement, Hassan Salifu, head of the Aminu family, attributed Nafisa’s remarkable success to “her discipline, tireless dedication, and the enabling educational environment created by the Yobe State Government under Governor Mai Mala Buni.”

“Our daughter’s victory is not just a personal milestone, but a national triumph made possible by the visionary investments in education by His Excellency,” Salifu said.

The global win has sparked widespread praise across Nigeria, with many citizens and stakeholders calling for the young scholar to be officially recognised by the Nigerian government.

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, took to social media on Tuesday to demand national honours for Nafisa. In his words, “She deserves no less than the same recognition recently given to the Super Falcons and D’Tigress — $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and an OON national honour.”

Pantami also advocated for Nafisa’s English teacher to be rewarded, citing the support given to coaches of national sports teams. “We must celebrate academic excellence with the same passion we show for sports. Education remains the foundation of our nation’s future,” he wrote.

On social media, the win has stirred emotional reactions. Popular commentator Daniel Regha praised Nafisa’s triumph, stating: “A Northerner did that. It proves brilliance knows no region. This victory destroys stereotypes and reminds us of the power of education.”

The management of NTIC Yobe also expressed pride in Nafisa’s accomplishment, crediting the win to a strong commitment to academic excellence. They joined the call for greater recognition of students who bring global honour to the country through education.
