Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has officially announced his exit from the party, marking a significant shake-up in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Atiku cited internal divisions, lack of direction, and the party’s failure to reform as key reasons for his decision to part ways with the PDP.
“At this critical moment in our country’s history, I can no longer continue to be part of a party that has clearly lost its way and betrayed the ideals that once defined it,” Atiku said.
The former Vice President, who has contested the presidency five times under different political platforms, expressed disappointment over what he described as the PDP’s inability to provide a credible opposition or unite for national interest.

Recall that Atiku had recently joined forces with former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Senate President David Mark, and several other political heavyweights to reposition the ADC as a unifying platform for the 2027 elections.
Party leaders have yet to issue an official response, but the announcement is expected to spark major realignments within the PDP and the broader opposition space.
Atiku’s exit comes at a time when the PDP is already grappling with internal wrangling, defections, and concerns over its viability ahead of 2027.
