Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), triggering a wave of mixed reactions and mockery across the country.
Oyegun received his ADC membership card on Tuesday from the Edo State chairman of the party, Kennedy Odion, during a brief ceremony at the ADC state secretariat in Benin City. While presenting the card, Odion described Oyegun as a seasoned coalition builder with a track record of uniting forces to rescue Nigeria.
“He has built a coalition before and succeeded,” Odion said. “Once you understand the formula, the result is easy. This is not new terrain for him.”
Speaking at the event, Oyegun explained that his decision to join the ADC was the outcome of months of consultation and analysis.
“We spoke to seven political parties. Even at the last minute, we were still being urged to consider other platforms. But at the end of our extensive review, we settled on ADC,” he said.
He added that the coalition chose ADC for its commitment to the Nigerian people and dismissed claims that the new alliance seeks to destabilize the current administration. Instead, he framed the move as a rescue mission.

“Those spreading rumours that we want to disrupt the government are only trying to water down our vision. ADC is here to rescue Nigeria,” Oyegun said.
The former APC chair did not spare his former party, blaming the ruling APC for the widespread hunger, insecurity, and deep divisions in the country.
His defection has been met with a flurry of social media reactions, with many Nigerians mocking the irony of a founding figure of APC now joining the opposition. Critics have described it as a political full circle, while others questioned the strength and direction of the new ADC-led coalition.
Oyegun, however, remained optimistic, declaring that the ADC was rapidly expanding with more defections on the horizon.
“From a month ago till now, ADC has become the biggest party in Nigeria. We are growing every day. It is now a mix of the best of the PDP and APC. And more are still coming,” he declared.
