The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died in London on Sunday.
This announcement follows the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Monday, July 14, on behalf of the Federal Government after receiving presidential approval.
According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, the holiday serves as a mark of respect for Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, both as a military head of state and a two-term civilian president. He praised the late president’s legacy of integrity, discipline, and commitment to national unity.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
He urged Nigerians to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism in honour of the late president’s vision for a better Nigeria.
As part of the mourning observance, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast across the country from Sunday, July 13, throughout the seven-day mourning period.
The Federal Government also extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late leader’s soul.
