The revered monarch of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91. His death was confirmed on Sunday, only hours after news broke of the death of Nigeria’s former president and his close confidant, Muhammadu Buhari.
A source close to the royal family said the monarch died peacefully at his private residence in Ijebu-Ode after a brief health relapse. The Ogun State Government is expected to make an official announcement and release funeral plans in the coming days.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for over 64 years, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers and one of the most respected voices in Yoruba land and across the country. Crowned in 1960, the same year Nigeria gained independence, the monarch’s reign witnessed massive transformations in Ijebuland, including economic development, cultural preservation, and political engagement.

Born on May 10, 1934, Sikiru Kayode Adetona ascended the throne at just 26 years old after studying accountancy in the United Kingdom. Throughout his decades on the throne, he was known for his outspoken views, fierce integrity, and progressive leadership. He was never afraid to challenge government policies and leaders, even during military regimes.
He maintained close relationships with many prominent Nigerian figures, but his friendship with former President Muhammadu Buhari, who also died on Sunday, was particularly noted for its longevity and mutual respect. Both men were known for their stoic personalities and shared admiration for discipline and public service.
The late Awujale played an instrumental role in preserving the cultural identity of the Ijebu people, spearheading initiatives like the Ojude Oba Festival, which blossomed into one of West Africa’s largest and most glamorous cultural events, attracting tourists, politicians, and royalty from across the world.
Beyond cultural preservation, Oba Adetona was a known advocate for democratic governance. He supported press freedom, often speaking up against political injustice, and once famously challenged President Olusegun Obasanjo’s leadership style.
In 2022, the monarch donated N250 million to establish the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, further proving his commitment to fostering ethical leadership and sound governance in Nigeria.
His death marks the end of an era for not only the people of Ijebuland but the entire Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large. Tributes have begun pouring in from traditional councils, political leaders, and cultural organizations, all describing Oba Adetona as a monarch of uncommon wisdom, courage, and foresight.
Funeral arrangements and succession discussions are expected to follow traditional rites in the coming days.
