A commercial driver accused of operating a one-chance robbery syndicate in Ibadan, Oyo State, has allegedly struck again, two months after a viral video first exposed his tactics.
The driver, whose identity remains unknown, was first captured in a May 15 video posted by Jesugbemi, a social media influencer. The clip showed the man and two accomplices, one seated in the front seat and a woman in the back, executing a familiar one-chance scam that targeted unsuspecting passengers.
In the three-minute video, the female accomplice is seen pretending to have stolen $1.5 million from her employer, pleading with the supposed driver and front-seat passenger not to hand her over to the police. All three actors then try to convince the victim, who was secretly recording, to join them in sharing the money. The woman even promised: “I will give everyone $10,000.”
At the time, Jesugbemi captioned the clip, “When will this nonsense stop in Ibadan?”
But on Wednesday night, two months after the video was posted, the same driver allegedly robbed another victim, an X user named Deola—near Akobo in Ibadan. Quoting the original May video, Deola exclaimed, “This is the man!” as she shared her ordeal, revealing that the gang stole her phone and money.
Reacting to the incident, Jesugbemi reposted the video again with a frustrated caption: “It’s sad that this same man roams the street with his Godforsaken micra.”
The post triggered fresh outrage online, as more users recalled similar incidents across Ibadan, Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt—often involving the same script: a fake story about stolen cash, a plea for help, and a bait to lure the victim before robbing them.
In response to the renewed attention, the Oyo State Government’s Feedback platform replied on Thursday:
“Thank you for contacting us. Your previous report was escalated to the appropriate authorities. We will send this as a reminder to ensure the matter receives the necessary attention. Meanwhile, citizens are also advised to call 615 or the Amotekun Coordinators in their LGA to report security emergencies.”
Despite being publicly exposed in May, the fact that this suspected criminal continues to operate openly has raised serious questions about enforcement and public safety in Ibadan.
One-chance robbery, a notorious form of street crime in Nigeria, involves a driver and accomplices who pose as fellow passengers to lure and rob innocent commuters.
