In what is believed to be the UK’s longest-running cold case to ever reach trial, 92-year-old Ryland Headley has been convicted of the rape and murder of 75-year-old Louisa Dunne, more than 57 years after the crime occurred.
The verdict, delivered by a jury at Bristol Crown Court, brought closure to a decades-old mystery surrounding the brutal killing of the mother-of-two in her Easton, Bristol home on June 28, 1967. Louisa Dunne, born in 1892, was found dead by concerned neighbours after she failed to appear on her doorstep, as was her morning routine.
The original investigation at the time was massive—19,000 palm print samples were taken and over 8,000 homes were visited. Yet, the case went unsolved for decades, largely because Headley had lived just outside the radius where palm prints were being collected.
However, in 2024, the case was reopened using advanced forensic techniques. New DNA testing of semen found on Ms Dunne’s clothing, combined with a palm print from a rear window, led police directly to Headley. Experts told the court the DNA match was “a billion times more likely” to belong to him than anyone else.
Headley, who was in his 30s at the time of the crime, was arrested at his Ipswich home in November 2024. He did not testify during his trial. However, forensic scientists were able to confirm that his palm print matched the one lifted from the scene in 1967.
Prosecutors also revealed that Headley had previously served prison time for two rapes committed in similar circumstances, involving elderly women who were also attacked in their homes. This pattern, they argued, showed his tendency for predatory violence.
During the attack on Louisa Dunne, she was repeatedly beaten, had abrasions on her face, and semen was found on her skirt. Her underwear had been pulled down, and she was found with vomit in her mouth and blood coming from her ear—clear signs of trauma.
The victim’s granddaughter told the court she had long given up hope of seeing justice, saying,
“Some murders just never get solved. Some people live with that emptiness. But when they said, ‘We have a suspect,’ I couldn’t believe it.”
