A Nigerian mother at the centre of a viral controversy has denied claims that she fed her five-month-old baby alcoholic bitters, insisting the sachet in the now-infamous video actually contained Coca-Cola.
The woman came under fire last week after a clip circulated online showing her feeding her infant from a sachet labelled “Action Bitters.” The video, captioned to suggest the baby was given the drink every night to help her sleep, sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for her arrest and child protection agencies stepping in.
Following public outcry, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed it had launched an investigation into the incident. But in a new video released on Wednesday, the mother explained that the content was staged and that no alcohol was involved.
“To be sincere, it was Coke I poured into the Action Bitters sachet,” she said. “I even have a video on my phone showing when I was doing it. My baby is just five months old — I would never give her bitters. I am not that kind of mother.”
She claimed she had washed out the sachet before use and only used it as a prop to generate viral attention online.
“I underestimated the backlash,” she admitted. “I was just trying to create content, nothing more. Please, we are begging Nigerians, forgive us.”
She further insisted she does not consume alcohol herself and had no intention of harming her child. Her explanation has sparked mixed reactions online, with some expressing doubt and others calling for her to be cautioned rather than criminalised.
