How a Pregnant Student Allegedly Burnt Her Boyfriend to Death Over a Fight

Tragedy struck in Choba, Rivers State, after a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, Cynthia Chukwundah, allegedly set her lover, 32-year-old Sunny Amadi, on fire during a domestic altercation that spiraled out of control.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday at a private residence on No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over Cynthia’s pregnancy. What began as a verbal exchange between the lovers soon escalated into a deadly confrontation, leaving both parties badly burned and Amadi fatally injured.

Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about a circulating social media report depicting a fire incident… According to the report, one Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level female undergraduate student of the University of Port Harcourt, allegedly set her boyfriend, Saint Sunny Amadi, a 32-year-old male from Elibrada Community, ablaze,” the statement read.

Police detectives from the Choba Division were immediately deployed to the scene and to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where the victim was receiving treatment. Unfortunately, Amadi succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead while on admission.

The police also confirmed that Chukwundah, who sustained burns during the incident, is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital under police supervision. According to SP Iringe-Koko, she is heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child and remains in critical condition, making it difficult for investigators to obtain a full account of what transpired.

“Due to her critical condition, she is unable to provide a detailed account of the incident, but will do so when her condition is stable,” the police spokesperson said, adding that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

She assured the public that a thorough investigation has been launched to uncover the truth behind the tragedy.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has appealed for calm while promising that justice will be served.

“This is a deeply troubling case, and we want to reassure the public that the command is committed to getting to the root of the matter. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure justice is done,” the statement concluded.
