Prince Kola Musbaudeen Asanike, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and governorship aspirant, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
In a statement issued on Monday, Prince Asanike described the monarch’s death as a profound loss to Ibadanland and Yorubaland, noting that although Oba Olakulehin’s reign lasted only a year, it was marked by dignity, calm, and a renewed sense of cultural pride.
“The news of Kabiyesi’s passing is heartbreaking,” Asanike stated.
“Though his reign was short, Oba Olakulehin ruled with quiet strength, uncommon grace, and a clear vision for unity among his people. He brought peace and stability to our land when it was most needed.”
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after his 90th birthday. He was the 43rd Olubadan and succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun.
Prince Asanike, who is the son of the late Olubadan, Oba Yesufu Asanike, said the latest royal transition carries great emotional weight for him personally and for the entire Asanike family.
“As someone who understands the gravity of that throne, being the son of a former Olubadan myself, I can say without hesitation that Oba Olakulehin wore the crown with honour. He was a monarch of quiet wisdom and solid character. Ibadan has lost another custodian of its proud heritage.”
He further prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and called on the Olubadan-in-Council and the people of Ibadan to maintain the peaceful tradition of royal succession the city is known for.
“Ibadan’s monarchy stands tall because of its transparent and time-tested succession model. I urge all stakeholders to uphold this legacy with dignity and unity, especially in times like this,” Asanike added.
The politician also extended his condolences to the Olubadan’s immediate family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and Governor Seyi Makinde, urging the people of Oyo State to honour the monarch’s memory by remaining united.
