Following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, former Oyo State Governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is next in line to ascend the revered traditional throne, in accordance with the Ibadan chieftaincy succession system.
Oba Olakulehin passed on in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. The late monarch received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024, following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, in March 2024.
According to the unique and structured succession system of Ibadanland, Ladoja, who currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan, is the most senior chief in the civil line and is therefore the immediate heir to the throne. The Olubadan succession alternates between two lines — the Otun (civil) and Balogun (military) lines — ensuring a predictable and relatively peaceful transition of power.
Who is Rashidi Ladoja?
Born on September 25, 1944, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja is a prominent figure in both Nigeria’s political and traditional spheres. He served as the Executive Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006 and has remained a respected voice in national affairs. His anticipated elevation to the position of Olubadan will mark a rare transition from political leadership to the apex of traditional authority.
What Happens Next?
The process of confirming a new Olubadan involves three steps:
-
Endorsement by the Olubadan-in-Council — comprising high-ranking chiefs in Ibadan’s traditional system.
-
Approval by the Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde.
-
Coronation, which will be formally announced and followed by traditional rites and a ceremonial installation.
This tested and orderly tradition of succession in Ibadanland has long been admired for its ability to limit disputes and preserve cultural harmony.
If confirmed, High Chief Ladoja will be enthroned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland — becoming one of the few Nigerians to have held both high political office and a first-class traditional stool.
