BREAKING: Olubadan Oba Olakulehin is Dead

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has reportedly passed on, marking the end of a brief but symbolic reign as the 43rd monarch of the ancient Yoruba city.

Sources close to the palace confirmed that the revered traditional ruler joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday on July 5.

Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in July 2024, received his staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, in March 2024.

Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin was widely respected for his wisdom, calm leadership, and deep commitment to preserving Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage during his short time on the throne.

As the Ibadan traditional succession system dictates, attention will now turn to the Olubadan-in-Council and the next line in the hierarchy to determine a successor in line with custom.

An official statement from the Oyo State Government or the Ibadan palace is expected to confirm the monarch’s passing and announce funeral arrangements.

Oba Olakulehin’s transition comes as a significant moment for Ibadanland, marking the close of a chapter in its long-standing traditional history.
