Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and national icon, Peter Rufai, has passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.
Fondly known as “Dodomayana”, Rufai was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, remembered for his agility, leadership, and lasting legacy between the posts. His death occurred on Thursday, marking a somber day for Nigerian football and the global football family.
Rufai’s illustrious career spanned over two decades, during which he played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. He proudly donned the green and white jersey in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, becoming a household name among fans of Nigerian football.
His passing coincides with another tragic loss in the world of football—the death of Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car crash in Spain earlier on the same day, alongside his brother.
