Heartbreak and disbelief have gripped the global football community following the tragic death of Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who passed away at the age of 28 in a car accident just days after his wedding. Jota was travelling with his brother, André Silva, when their car veered off the road in Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain, and burst into flames. Both men died at the scene.
The news, confirmed by local Spanish authorities, has sent shockwaves through the sporting world, with an outpouring of grief from teammates, coaches, football federations, and fans.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who signed Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, led the tributes with a deeply emotional message.
“This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it!” Klopp wrote, sharing a photo of himself embracing Jota. “I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving, caring husband and father. We will miss you so much!”
“All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace – Love, J.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, visibly shaken, paid tribute to his compatriot and recent Nations League teammate.
“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
Ronaldo added that Jota’s sudden death “doesn’t make sense.”
Rúben Neves, Jota’s former Wolves teammate and close friend, posted a short but poignant message:
“They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you.”
Fellow former teammate Raúl Jiménez, now at Fulham, also expressed his sorrow:
“It’s hard to receive this kind of news, and I still can’t believe it. An excellent teammate, friend, and above all, a great father. Thanks for everything, my friend. We’ll always remember you. A hug to heaven. R.I.P.”
The Portuguese Football Federation and footballing institutions across Portugal have declared a period of mourning. Federation president Pedro Proença described Jota as:
“An extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community.”
Jota’s former club, FC Porto, where he spent the 2016–17 season on loan from Atlético Madrid, said in a statement:
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences.”
Liga Portugal added that “the entire football universe is in mourning.”
Jota began his professional career at Paços de Ferreira before making moves to Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and eventually Liverpool, where he became a fan favourite. Known for his clinical finishing, versatility, and humble personality, Jota earned 49 caps for the Portuguese national team.
The tragedy comes just days after he reportedly tied the knot with his long-time partner Rute Cardoso, adding another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating loss.
As tributes continue to pour in, one thing remains certain: Diogo Jota’s light may have been extinguished far too soon, but his impact—on and off the pitch—will never be forgotten.
