Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has convicted two popular TikTok content creators, Bukola Arike Rufai and Abdulateef Ayinde Jimoh, for mutilating Nigerian currency.
The duo was arraigned by the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a joint one-count charge bordering on the abuse of naira notes, an offence punishable under the Central Bank Act of 2007.
According to the charge, the offence was committed on or about September 25, 2024, when the defendants were captured on video stepping on naira notes—an act deemed a violation of Section 21(3) and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Act.
Upon arraignment, both Rufai and Jimoh pleaded guilty. Prosecution counsel, Lanre Suleiman, presented evidence including the incriminating video and urged the court to convict and sentence the defendants. In response, the defence counsel, O.D. Ajadi, appealed to the court for leniency, citing their status as first-time offenders who had shown remorse.
Justice Agomoh convicted both individuals and imposed a fine of ₦50,000 each, rather than a custodial sentence.
Their arrest followed a video they shared on TikTok, where they were seen spraying and trampling on naira notes during a social gathering, prompting public outrage and legal action by the EFCC.
