Over 35 UI Students Get Financial Relief as Union Shares ₦2 Million Bursary

In a significant move to support financially struggling students, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) has disbursed need-based bursaries totalling over ₦2 million to more than 35 students.

The initiative, which forms part of the Union’s June 2025 activities, highlights its renewed commitment to student welfare under the leadership of President Covenant Odedele.

The disbursement followed an open application process announced on June 24, through which students were invited to apply for the bursary. By June 27, successful applicants had received their funds.

According to the Union, the beneficiaries were selected based on verified need, with transparency and equity guiding the process.

“The bursary disbursement is part of our broader commitment to ensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints,” the Union stated in its monthly newsletter released at the end of June.

Aside from the bursary, the Students’ Union was active throughout the month on several other fronts. Notably, it continued advocacy efforts for deadline extensions on school fee payments and course registration, resulting in three separate extensions, the last pushing the deadline to June 30.

In academics, the Office of the Vice President, Olabisi Owadayo, led multiple tutorial sessions in core GST and GES courses, aimed at bolstering students’ performance. Socially, the Union partnered with Comic Con Ibadan to host an E-sports competition and also wrapped up the prestigious Seals Cup, with MBBS and Human Kinetics emerging as male and female champions respectively.

In another outreach effort, the Union collaborated with Nivea Nigeria for a product activation campaign that provided students with free products and discounts.

The newsletter also marked the Union’s first 100 days in office, commemorated by a public feedback campaign and a highlight reel of achievements, including infrastructure advocacy, academic support, campus sports revitalization, and welfare-driven initiatives like the bursary program.

With growing concerns about scams and security threats on campus, the Union also issued a public alert calling for increased vigilance among students.

As the UI Students’ Union continues its tenure under the “Auspicious Team,” student leaders reaffirmed their mission to provide responsive, visible, and impactful leadership.
