Commuters, Staff Stranded as Polytechnic Ibadan Students Protest Renaming

There was chaos in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday morning as students of The Polytechnic Ibadan staged a protest against the proposed renaming of their institution by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The demonstration, which began in the early hours, left hundreds of commuters and staff stranded along the ever-busy Sango-Eleyele Road. Students blocked both the main entrance to the school and major sections of the road, causing a gridlock that stretched for several kilometres.

The protest follows an announcement by Governor Makinde last week to rename The Polytechnic Ibadan as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, the first Ibadan-born governor of the old Oyo State, who served briefly from October to December 1983.

Chanting solidarity songs and wielding placards, the students voiced strong opposition to the renaming, describing it as unnecessary and imposed. Many staff members who attempted to access the school premises were also caught up in the protest, unable to enter due to the blockade.

At the time of this report, the protest was ongoing, with increased security presence expected to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
