The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that by-elections will be held across several affected federal and state constituencies on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during a consultative meeting with leaders of political parties held in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Yakubu, the by-elections are being organised to fill legislative seats left vacant due to resignations, court nullifications, or the deaths of sitting members.
Notably, the elections will include the Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State, which became vacant following the death of Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, a two-term APC lawmaker who died on July 10, 2024, at the age of 51.
Other affected constituencies include:
-
Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, vacant since the death of Hon. Oriyomi Onanuga in January 2025.
-
Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency in Sokoto State, following the death of Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga in October 2023.
-
Garki/Babura Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, after the demise of Isa Dogonyaro in May 2024.
-
Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, which became vacant after its former representative, Dennis Idahosa, assumed office as the state’s deputy governor.
INEC is expected to release the full election timetable and guidelines in the coming days as preparations for the by-elections commence.
